Sidney's Baptism

To our surprise, Easter happened to fall on April 12th, Sidney's 8th birthday . What a perfect day to celebrate an eighth birthday! On May 16th, we were able to participate in her baptism. We had an enormous support from our ward family. I felt a tremendous gratitude for those who have welcomed us to this Mississippi community. For the small group of faithful members who have sincerely shown us that those things important to us, are important to them. It was a beautiful day.
As Sidney was asked to give a talk this past Sunday on Baptism, she jotted a few of her feelings down to share....

"When I was baptized I felt clean and good. When I was pushed
under the water, I felt warm because the water was warm and because I was getting baptized. As I was dressed in my white dress, I felt wonderful. It made me happy that people were there to see me get baptized. They would say nice things to me like, "Way to go!""

Here are a few facts and thoughts of mine as I have reflected on Sidney's life.

Sidney was born on Thursday, April 12, 2001, in the Timpanogas (Orem) hospital.

Her name came from my very special Great Grandfather, Sidney Alexander Pace, and my Grandfather, Joseph Sidney Pace.

She was our only child to be induced, and was the most pleasant birth.

She had full head of jet black hair....she was absolutely beautiful!

Sidney was the most passive, pleasant baby. She could be left in the middle of the floor on a blanket and she would do nothing. No crying, no crawling, no whimpering....nothing. I thought it was very unusual, but did not complain.

From early on, she became very attached to her thumb and blanket. As long as she had that combo, she was perfectly content.

At about 2 years old, she had the most adorable Shirley Temple curls. She was always a happy, smiling child.

We moved from our Midvale home to California when Sidney was about 9 months. So, in her short 8 years, she has lived in 4 states.

As a little girl, Sidney became a wiz at puzzles. Today, she is excellent in Math, and is an A student overall. She is a pleasant student and a hard worker.

She has always loved purses, and today, she carries around a ladies purse that Aunt Natty gave her....nearly half her size.

She loves to draw and color.

She doesn't mind a messy room.

She hates to listen to other people singing. She thinks it is "so ANNOYING!" ie: Kenadee

She will play for hours outside in the dirt with Spencer, and then together go inside to play cars and paint fingernails.

She likes to put on make-up and paint her nails, as well as, any other gullible visitor male or female.

Sidney is an independent worker, and can work and play by herself for hours.

When she's nervous, she skips.

She is not afraid to visit with and make new friends. She met half of those who attended her birthday party at recess.

She doesn't like to sleep in the dark, and many times will bunk up with someone.

She loves all kinds of foods....definately our best eater. Our mistake was introducing her to shrimp and crab. She will try anything.

She loves, LOVES little children! She will be a great babysitter someday.

We are so blessed to have her in our family. She is a great example of goodness and love. Sidney is a follower of Jesus, and will be a great champion for Him throughout her life. We love you so much Sidney!

So....in about December I decided to start running. To motivate myself I signed up for a race in Pensacola, Florida. Since that time I have have been running fairly regularly, and so far have completed two 5k's and two 10k's. I've never finished last, but frequently have seen the police car trailing close behind signifying the end of the race. I actually enjoy it quite a bit, and look forward to having time to run, which is the hardest part. My point in all this rambling is that Jalayne has been very supportive. She is always flexible in letting me run even when it is not convenient, and best of all she is always at the finish line to snap a photograph. She is more than supportive, and for this and many other things, I love her. All and all we had a great weekend and enjoyed great weather.

Yesterday was Spencer's birthday. I can't believe he is 6 years old! I still remember vividly walking the halls of the Saddleback hospital on a beautiful Laguna Niguel, CA afternoon, wondering if it was going to be the day to finally see our little boy. And then being disappointed, scared and commited to set up camp in the parking lot because they wanted to send me home at 4cm. From the pattern of prior deliveries, that would only create the home birthing experience that Shawn had always dreaded. But luckily, they kept me and around 2pm, "I laughed him out" as the doctor put it. He was perfect.
We named him Shawn Spencer. Lauren wanted Mason. So all the way home both Lauren and I cried, she because Spencer just wasn't good enough, and I, well simply just because.....it's complicated, you know.
Well, that Lauren that couldn't bare having a "Spencer" in her life at the time has just loved on him since day one. Even yesterday when I picked her up, she asked Spencer if he was having a great birthday, and told him that she had told her whole class that it was his birthday, and they all wanted to wish him a "Happy Birthday." Isn't that sweet. And to this day, she still tries to be right there, "hand's on" when unwrapping presents, to show him where the tape is and the best place to pull the edges. Only for a little brother.

Spencer.....
was born on March 25, 2003
Had lots of dark hair, and big hands.
In fact those hands will look just like his Dad's, big and strong. I can see that today.
Was a good, sweet baby with beautiful blue eyes.
Sucked his thumb early on. That led to one finger in his mouth, another up his nose, with the other hand holding his blanket close. Still, he was cute.
Loved wearing his Superman costume or cape WHEREVER we went. Especially loved to run and see his cape flapping in the wind.
Learned to ride a bike when he was barely 4. Nearly knocked his front teeth out: TWICE.
LOVES superheroes, especially Transformers. Has been asking for Transformers for a LONG time....I thought this phase would end.
Used to love dressing up in the girl's dress-up clothes.
STILL likes having his nails painted blue. Even when his friends ask in bewilderment "Why?".
Doesn't like to hug or kiss me when I drop him off to school. Although, I can always see him looking at me in the corner of his eye with a smile that he is trying to hold back.
That same look is there when I pick him up.
BUT, LOVES me to hold his hand when I'm at school. I can't leave without watching him at recess.
Absolutely MUST wear a suit and tie to church.
Often talks me into letting him wear it to school.
Likes jewelry, and often looks like Mr. T. I'm serious.
LOVES mud and dirt. Bathes every night, and I am constantly washing his shoes.
Was TERRIFIED of dogs (even little ones) until Raven came along.
Raven, our dog who eats EVERYTHING, was given Spencer's old bedspread as a new bed. He tearfully chewed her out while waving his finger, "You better not eat my blanket!".
Doesn't like to cry in front of people.
Breaks my heart when he cries after getting in trouble. I know that he is really hurt.
Is soft spoken.
A perfectionist in things.
Loves to read instructions and build things.
His next love: Legos.
A great little reader, and top of his class at school.
Has perfect penmanship for a little guy, and a great artist. It is astonishing.
Still loves his blanket. Lost his first one when he was tiny "in the mountains" on the way to Utah. Cried the whole way there. I cried too. Hasn't missed it since getting a new one from Aunt Natty.
Loves McDonald's. Tried to eat there twice for his birthday.
Says the only thing that makes him tired at night is being able to play with his toys, or read.
Loves them in the tub too. All of them, except the books.
Will always be our little Buddy. We love him!

Florida in February

Recently, we returned from a fabulous vacation in Florida. The weather was amazing, so warm, sunny- Perfect. Our company was great, as we spent a few days with Mike, Mandy and their kids while Mike and Shawn ran the Bridge to Bridge run in Pensacola, and then off to Kissimmee to meet up with Grandma, Grandpa and Mickey for 3 days. We loved every minute.

unless I can carry a Snickers in my pocket. Is that ok?

I am trying to get motivated, but it is so HARD! I don't eat THAT healthy, and don't exercise (except when I am cleaning....and I DO consider that some exercise). How do people over come their addictions? I mean, last night Shawn and I shared nearly a whole bag (not the mini) of M&M's while laying in bed watching TV. If you look in my nightstand, you will find a collection of goodies.....from Almond Snickers to taffy. I'd like to call it an evening tradition. That sounds nice. However, the guilt is becoming more than I can bare! Surely, I'm losing years of my life due to these unfortunate habits.

I declare, it must be in the genes. How can people exercise twice a day, and then go home to eat whole grain everything, complete servings of fruits and vegetables and maybe a flourless chocolate cake made out of tofu and pure, bitter chocolate (I'm sure that's possible....tofu can be transformed into anything, or so I've heard). Many people do this without wincing, cringing....no aches, no sorrow. I don't know how they do it.

Switching gears. SERIOUSLY, I see the meaning of having "opposition in all things," as applied to this aspect of our lives. Taking care of our bodies is a enormous challenge for many of us. For Latter Day Saint church members, we have the word of wisdom. I believe that living or not living this commandment has huge ramifications, not only for us individually, but as families. And the consequences sometimes aren't so visible. I believe this, yet I don't live it completely.

Shawn has been working so hard to live healthier. He has cut out his Coke consumption, almost entirely, and he has been running 3-6 miles nearly every day for 2 months. We just returned home from the Bridge to Bridge run in Pensacola, Florida. There he ran his first race. I am so proud of him. I KNOW it is hard work, because I still can't get up an moving. But, I am motivated by him and the knowledge that my future is largely in my hands. I want to grow old being healthy and active, so I can enjoy my husband, children and grandchildren.

That is my motivation.

Memphis has a 10k in April. Now where do I get those dorky headbands?

A great book

I am not much into novels. Yes, I did dive into the Twilight series, like most of you, but honestly I am still stuck on the third book. It sits near my nightstand collecting dust. I admit, I have tried to have a crush on the delectable Edward, I really have. But, sadly, I'm not. Am I normal? I mean The Twilight series is like the High School Musical movies series for little kiddies...and big kiddies. It even reaches daddies...don't tell, but my hubby loves to jog to the music. I think he even does a little shake or two and belts out a few tunes...that is, until he realizes he is not in the Wildcats basketball championship or at East High's Prom. I don't fault him, I even wish I were Gabriella sometimes. AHHHH..... what's that song....I can hear it now. Anyhow, I am rambling, and my point really is that I don't fall in love with many novels or fictional characters. I spend most of my time reading current events or educational articles and books. On occasion, I find a book that I think will give me a spiritual lift. May I recommend an author who I have really become captivated by. His name is James Ferrell. I don't know how I came across his first book, "The Peacegiver," but it is one of the most amazing books ever. Short, but powerful. His new release, "The Holy Secret," is equally fantastic. These books have helped me with my perspective on life and the things that are most important. They awaken my spirit, and help me re-prioritize. They help me want to be better. Sorry Edward, I could love you, but I just don't think that will get me anywhere.
Anyone who wants to borrow my copy, either book, let me know. I have the Twilight series as well. And Friends, please remember that I love "ladies night out." Don't banish me when the vampire hero comes into town, I have been and will continue to be one of those first in line to buy movie tickets.

First of all, I have to say I have the best hubby who gives up his time, sleep, sanity, money, etc., etc.... and has to sharpen up his homemaking skills so I can leave the kids and venture out to Utah to hang out with my parents, where I can waste time, sleep in, spend money, regain my sanity, not make the bed, do the laundry, dishes, or anything! I love it! I love him....he is awesome....aren't you ladies jealous!
Anyway, last week I made a trip out to meet up with my cousin photographer (who is so extremely talented) in hopes of stealing all her photography secrets. My actual trip up north was crazy from leaving St. George at 5am to arrive in Pleasant Grove around 9:30 (I mean 10am because I had to nap in a gas station parking lot), working hard all day and cramming photo info. into every brain cell that I could find, leaving to go south at 6pm and then waking up at 5am to drive to Vegas catch a plane and spend the whole day in various airports feeling like I had stayed up all night embracing Karaoke with a few too many. Not fun! But overall, my trip was fantastic! I came home with great information and a new confidence in my photography pursuits, a refreshed fondness and love for my parents and a deeper gratitude and love for my husband, plus, I missed him and my kiddos. As proof of my adventure...here are a few photos from my session.

This week was a little rough for Buddy. First, he did not heed his mother's counsel to not run around, jumping, leaping and chasing his yellow balloon. Soon enough, he came back to me bleeding with a loose tooth and a big, FAT lip. Poor thing was drooling, slurping and mumbling for the next two days as if he was numb and didn't have any control over his mouth. I decided to keep him home from school on day 2, thinking his teacher would thank me for that. This is the second time he had fallen or crashed resulting in loose front teeth. I hope there is not a third time.....I think it will be the "charm". To add to the battering, Spencer hit is eye on some object in his room a few days later, resulting in a minor black eye. Poor thing! I hope an injured limb is not next in line!

I got this picture as he was sleeping in my bed tonight. Aahhhh....so loveable. When Shawn goes out of town, I let the kids take turns sleeping in my bed. I know many of you have maxxed out your patience because you can't get your children to sleep or want to sleep anywhere else but your bed. For us, Spencer has NEVER wanted to sleep anywhere but his bed until lately. It has been funny at times to almost beg or bribe him to take a minute snuggling with Mom or Dad. I don't want to pass up those times when he really wants to hang out with me, and tonight....well, it was one of them!

There are definately a handful of things that I look forward to when Shawn is away....eating my favorite dishes that I grew up with that he won't touch, or not cooking at all, snuggling in bed with our kiddos and popcorn (crumbs and everything), and singing in the car (I threw that in for our girls). Otherwise, we miss our Dad and hubby, and hope that he survives hiking in Zion National Park, and Vegas. Looks like a dangerous week...SO, keep your repeling gear on and don't bother with the slots, tables or shows ...yes, you can try that all you can eat buffet, oh yeah, you despise buffets...OK, have a nice dinner, yeah you can even have that Creme brulee (please, don't tell me how much it costs).... just remember we are trying to recover from stocks crashing and we have 4 kids that need college educations! Good luck Dear and hurry home!

Halloween...Mississippi style

AHHH....the weather was fabulous for trick or treating this year! There was no need to bundle up, there was no bone chilling cold and rain, kids were sporting their costumes without 6 layers over and under costumes...imagine that coming from Seattle. This year for Halloween, we participated in our church Trunk or Treat and chili dinner...yum! As far as the Trunk or Treating....I thought it would be a simple open the trunk (by the way, we are party poopers...I will pay any of you out there if you can get Shawn to wear a costume...a real costume), send the kids a runnin, empty the goodies into the cute kiddies bags, and after about 4 or so rounds, and 15 minutes later, slam the trunk and peel out of the parking lot headed to the nearest, closest spaced, spookiest looking homes to find the grandest candies, and ultimately the biggest bags....isn't Halloween about the goods? Don't we as parents support our kids in this endeavor only to wait impatiently for them to fall asleep with our goal of raiding their candy bags looking for our favorite cravings. Well, not so fast! This year's trunk or treating, took up more precious door to door time then ever imagined! And, in the end, the kids came home with bags only half full. Boo hoo! I guess on the bright side, I can selectively choose my favorite candy at the store with the savings from not having to fill so many cavities. Perhaps some new shoes as well!
Honestly, I have to say, we saw some spectular old Southern style mansions decorated to the hilt! That is really what I enjoy most about the Halloween festivities. I really do love the great, creative costumes, and the wonderful, or shall I say "spooktacular" decorations....perhaps, a few pieces of candy too! Until next Halloween, here are the spooksters from our home. Not too scary are they? Kenadee as evil Cleopatra, Lauren as a lovely Renaissance queen, Sidney as your typical witch with purple hair, and Spencer our clumbsy, but cute Batman.

"Pray Always"

Last weekend, we were able to participate in our bi-annual General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Since then, I have tried to read or re-listen to the talks given in this conference, and most recently, I listened to the talk given by Elder Bednar titled, "Pray Always".

I loved this talk because Elder Bednar emphasized why and how prayer can change us. He focused on 3 principles of more meaningful prayer.

Principle #1. Prayer becomes more meaningful as we counsel with the Lord in all our doings (see Alma 37:37).

Principle #2. Prayer becomes more meaningful as we express heartfelt gratitude.

Principle #3. Prayer becomes more meaningful as we pray for others with real intent and a sincere heart.

"Morning and evening prayers—and all of the prayers in between—are not unrelated, discrete events; rather, they are linked together each day and across days, weeks, months, and even years. This is in part how we fulfill the scriptural admonition to “pray always” (Luke 21:36; 3 Nephi 18:15, 18; D&C 31:12). Such meaningful prayers are instrumental in obtaining the highest blessings God holds in store for His faithful children."

I look forward to more fully applying this principle to my life, in the hope of receiving those blessings and guidance that I need each day.

Here are a few pictures that I took of Mike (Shawn's brother), Mandy and their family. You won't find a more beautiful bunch! I just want to squeeze these kiddos! They were terrific, even through the constant distraction of Spencer running here, there and everywhere, and luring half the group away into the dirt, trees, rocks...you get the picture. It is always fun being with this crew!

The other day we took Lauren and Sidney to Rowan Oak, the historic home of William Faulkner, to take some pictures. It was a perfect location! After having some fun with editing, here are a handful of shots that we liked. I get the best feeling when my kids get excited about the results. It is that big boost of confidence that they need at times!

In addition, I now have my own webpage! How exciting! (I think Shawn wants me to start making a buck or two now that I am home by myself.) Really, he has been extremely supportive helping me launch my own little business. Soon, we'll be up and running! Can't wait!

It has been forever since I really posted a summary of our family events! I should blame it on the dog that we lovingly adopted the first of August....oh no....it is really because I have been fighting with the children over the new Wii that I got for my graduation. Yes, for my graduation! Who out there thinks that I requested a Wii, or ever mentioned a Wii other than, "we should never get one!"?
Anyhow, I am back after a long mental vacation, but sadly, there have been some great times during these past couple of months that I failed to write about. So, here is a quick timeline of a few events that have happened since the end of July!

For Pioneer Day, we went to a ward members farm to chase goats, sit by the smoldering fire (way too hot in July), tell Pioneer stories, and eat!

The first week of August, Shawn and I decided to live up to our promises and finally get a "family dog". And here she is....Raven....isn't she cute!

On August 2, ALL the kids started school. The school setup in Oxford is VERY interesting. They have one school city wide for K/1, 2/3, 4/5... that means that all of our kids go to different schools. Don't you envy our mornings? There was trepidation among all of them except Spencer, surprisingly. Upon departure, we don't get a hug goodbye or a wave from him; however, if we're lucky, he might look back (I'm sure just to make sure that we are leaving). I thought the abandonment of parents started in the teen years?

Ahhhhh.....the Water Valley Watermelon Festival, and on the hottest day ever! Lucky for us, we got free watermelon. Not the itty bitty slices or cubes for those afraid to get their hands sticky and messy, or for those wanting to keep their faces dry and proper. These watermelon quarters, were for us serious watermelon eaters. YUM!

Another Telford gang is in town, headed for Ole Miss' Law School. Welcome Mike, Mandy and kids! So glad you are here!

And then there were 2 birthdays. Would it surprise you that I can't find the pictures? So sorry...check back!

Finally, the historic 1st Presidential debate was held here in Oxford, at the University of Mississippi's Ford Center for the Performing Arts. Both Kenadee and Lauren had artwork chosen to be presented at surrounding locations in our downtown Oxford Square. Kenadee also had a thought published in the paper. I will post those as soon as I find the flash card! How exciting!

Trying my hand in Photography

Now that I am officially done with school, and I have all my kids in full day school, I am going to try my hand in a photography business. One of the first things needed is a portfolio. Here are my most recent participants, and some of my favorite shots. Spencer was a true boy, tried my patience (like most photography moments with him) and would not give me the time of day unless I myself turned into a stick or rock, Kenadee was a photographers dream, and I was lunch for a dozen mosquitos...you should've seen my legs! Nearly 30 bites, no joke! All Shawn could say as I was exclaiming that I was being eaten a live was, Nah!...they aren't biting me, you must have some itching...WHAT? Yah! 24 hours later! I should have photographed that! Anyhow, here are the pictures without professional editing. My computer has been down and I haven't been able to use the Photoshop processing software. Photography is so exciting...I am hooked!

Aaahhhh.....It is over! An enormous weight is now gone. Dreams do come true, but sometimes after blood, sweat and tears. After a rough couple of months, my kids can come out of hiding or prison, as they would describe it, and my husband can happily live with me again. Our house can finally be in order, and it has never felt so good. I am now a college grad at 35. The road was incredibly difficult and the journey long, but it is over. Now, let's celebrate! Disneyland anyone?

Saturday

Who said Saturday's were for sleeping in! Believe me, this family was programmed to sleep in, but not this Saturday. We were up and movin'! We had a birthday party to attend, and I had my final capstone course papers to get off in the mail. For me, there was a great sense of relief, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could do something fun. I said, "Hey, why don't we go see a movie!" The response...."Dad's going to chop down a tree!" Spencer's reply...."This is going to be totally awesome!" He said this with such enthusiasm, I wondered if we ever had done anything fun with the kids.

So off they went, chopping away. Everything was interesting and all until Shawn began demanding "Water! Water!" as if he were making his last requests before death.

Spencer, ever so eager to help with the hefty task or possibly a little concerned about his father's health, kept asking every couple minutes, "Dad, don't you need your saw?"

The response...."No....got it....were's my water!"

"Dad, are you ok?"

Timber! Shawn survived and the tree's down, but still in the yard. Any bets on how long it will be there?

Sunday

Shawn has created a great routine of taking evening walks around the lake by our home. The kids seem to thoroughly enjoy chasing and spooking the geese.

Shawn also got this awesome picture where it appears that Kenadee is pushing down the sun. Kind of cool, huh?

One of my favorite things about living in the south are the warm evenings. Lately the kids and I have taken to walking after dinner. There is a loop around the lake that is just over 3 miles, the perfect length for Dad to get some exercise and to get the kids tired out. The temperature cools off enough that it is not uncomfortable, still humid and certainly not jacket weather. The kids love seeing the flock of canadian geese flying and swimming, the frogs, the fireflies,the occasional deer, fish jumping and so on. The sounds from all the bugs are amazing. I look forward to watching the kids have fun, taking pictures of the children and seeing the colors of the sunset each night. This is a beautiful place and we are fortunate to live here.

My sister, Brenda, and her two cute girls, Morgan and Ava, stopped to visit while passing through town, headed from North Carolina to Arizona. What a brave soul she is! Brian, her husband, is a Harrier jet pilot, and their family is on their way to be stationed in Yuma, Arizona.
Thanks for stopping by! It was fun to catch up and the girls never turn away a model willing to undergo a few sparkle applications or major makeover (preferrably). They love hangin out with their little cousins. Wish you were closer!

Meals in the Telford home have become quite boring. So, I am on a mission to find some new, great ones! My goal is that my family will wish to stay home and eat, rather than go to McDonald's or BurgerKing (...ughhh....I know!). I swear, I'm not that bad of a cook! (Bloggers who have a different opinion- zip it!) And, as my journey goes....I will post the recipe and where I found it. Sounds like fun, doesn't it!

Last night, we cooked up some Sweet and Sour Chicken over rice, and I think we found a winner!!! My friend, Tauna, sent me a family member's website, www.homebasedmom.com (great site, thanks Tauna!)and I am already eyeing a dozen more recipes to try. This was the first...and very yummy. However, next time, I will reduce the amount of pineapple added. If you love pineapple, you will love it because it is definately overloaded! I may increase the soy sauce as well. Overall, it cooked up beautifully, and most of my kids ate it all (that is a great sign)!

Sweet and Sour Chicken

serves 4

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes

6 tablespoons flour seasoned with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper

1/4 cup olive oil

1/8 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup vinegar

1 20 oz. can pineapple tidbits (reserve juice)

1/2 cup pineapple juice (use reserved juice)

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 red bell pepper, sliced

1/4 cup onion, sliced

Coat chicken in flour and fry in olive oil until browned. Drain and set aside. In same skillet, combine cornstarch, salt, pepper, brown sugar, vinegar, pineapple juice, chicken broth and soy sauce. Cook and stir until boiling. Reduce heat and cook for 2 minutes. Add chicken, peppers, onions, and pineapple. Cook until heated through. Serve over rice. Enjoy!

This year for the 4th, we had a great pool side BBQ and swim at our friends, the Fye's. For years, we have been attending Provo's SPECTACULAR Stadium of Fire; however, due to various reasons, including our recent move, it just wasn't possible this year. BUMMER big time for the kids since Miley Cyrus performed this year. Ouch kids....I know it hurts! Regardless, they had a blast swimming and playing with friends. Thank you Fye's!! Once again, you saved the day! Afterwards, we watched fireworks shot off near Ole Miss' baseball stadium. I would say we had a great day!
On a more serious note, I am so grateful to live in land with freedom to laugh, play, work, worship.....LIVE with peace and prosperity! Most days I do not really recognize how blessed I am to have those abilities, and I should. Thank you to the brave men and women both past, present and future who make such a sacrifice for US. I am indeed, proud to be an American!

2008 World Series Champs!

This summer, Shawn and I were able to participate in a co-ed slow pitch softball league. Here in Oxford, many small businesses will sponsor a team, and FNC once again sponsored the "Powerstrokes"....that's us! Goooo......Powerstrokes!! Ra! Ra!

Now, I played first base because 1. they HAD to play 5 men 5 women; 2. team desperation 3. the playing position would be kept in an approx. 10ft radius, thus decreasing my need to run fast and jump high, thus, decreasing the likelihood of calling 911, CPR and cardiac arrest and 4. they noticed the unbelievable ability to reflect the sun off of my legs to create a glare in each batter's eyes resulting in 3 up, 3 down. Unfortunatly, it wasn't because of my amazing ability to leap high, dive low and fire an amazing throw to anywhere infield, although I'd like to think that.

Honestly, I really was a little freaked out at times to play this position, especially when these burly guys would get up to bat. I knew, if they hit a line drive toward me, I would surely die or the very least have my teeth knocked out. And I knew, that their goal was to hit the ball to the most vulnerable position on field. Yep, that would be me!

I think Shawn was worried for me as well. After each batter, he would ask ME, "Are you ready?" What about the other 8 players on the field? And each time that I happened to get a hit, I would hear this, "RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN.....!!!!" Ok, what else do you think I'm going to do? And do you really think that I could possibly run faster? I already need a full day's bedrest and a tube of icyhot after each sprint to first.

And yes, I did play, but 20 years ago! And my age....oh my! Most of these teams were young, buff college age machos with their cute girlfriends. Then, there is Shawn and I.... a little out of shape (ok ALOT out of shape), a little overweight (Just a little ok...we're trying to keep our self confidence!) with reflexes...much slower, running, panting, joints creeking, sweating like pigs, always in the "ready position" but only because this was the closest thing to sitting down between plays...... not to mention the handful of kids running around, laughing, fighting, begging, crying, whining- with lots of dirt mixed in....yes, those would be ours!

Shawn played the position of pitcher. He did very well, only walking a couple of batters, snagging some infield balls and withstanding the blows from runners coming to home, especially one not so gentle "Miss" who came thundering home (catch my drift). This was a great opportunity especially as he is still recovering from shoulder surgery. Great job Babe!
Honestly, it was so much fun playing with Shawn and on top of that we both survived. We are already looking forward to next year, after training that is.

One of our most favorite comments that Spencer has made while being in Mississippi is, "I love Mississippi because they have baseball!" From his view, no other place had baseball where he could play (he has been accustomed to hanging out in the dirt while his sisters play), but in realty, this was the first year he was eligible. Shhhh.....that's our secret.

First Grade Birthdays in Mississippi

Yep, it's me again! Hey I'm really into this "blog" thing! And if you haven't sent your blog address to me....well, you're not welcome here! j/k

Anyway, onto the good stuff. You know, I really should be studying. I have a midterm tomorrow. Took a practice test. Scored...let's just say, not very good. But before I surrender to my Statistics textbook, I will take a minute to share an experience that Sidney and I had around her birthday in April, about a week after we arrived in Oxford.

Let's just start by saying that Mississippi....well, it's a different world here! And if any of you who may have sons or daughters that need a little straightening up, don't send them to one of those wilderness camps, just send them here!

Mrs. Palmertree was Sidney's teacher. She is a super friendly lady, very happy and excited about school and the children. Now, Mrs. Palmertree has been teaching for 20+ years, and has a birthday tradition that she has carried on during those years. She calls it, "birthday tickles and spanks". Yep, you heard it right. And there is no holding back. Well, when I heard about this, the moment when Mrs. Palmertree was putting Sidney over her lap, I thought, "This MUST be a set-up for, "Smile...You've been caught on hidden camera!" I mean, people...teachers...parents...etc. cannot even tap a child on the shoulder, in the states which I grew up and moved around to. And there Sidney was, lying over Mrs. Palmertree's lap! WHOAA! Things HAVE changed in the Telford world.
Ok. So first things first....tickles. Mrs. Palmertree gave her "7" tickles. Sidney was howling with laughter. I thought she was going to pee her pants...she probably should have.
And then....the target!

Right on her hiney! My eyes got big, and I subtley looked around to see the reaction. Oh boy, everyone was into this! Well, my eyes got even bigger when Mrs. Palmertree started swatting Sidney. One carefully calculated wallup at a time. Of course, this was all fun for the kids, Mrs. Palmertree and even Sidney. (Before you gasp..NOTE: This was a dramatized spanking, and all the children look forward to it.) I was just a wee bit surprised. Well Sidney, "Happy Birthday!" I bet you're looking forward to your next one! Regardless of the unexpected "tickles and spanks," Sidney really liked her teacher, and I did too. This is the world you call, MISSISSIPPI! And yes...we do like it here!

These pictures are for all of our family across the states! I know the rest of you are probably saying, "How many pictures do you need!" ALOT! Shawn and I LOVE taking and displaying pictures. The best part is looking back at these moments. They truly are "priceless". So, all you folk who don't own a good camera. Make an investment. It is better than any nice piece of furniture, summer of golf, year supply of "Big Gulps"...you get the idea. That is my opinion, of course.

Luckily, dad, our superhero (3 cheers for Pops!) grabbed that monsterous snake (I mean 3 feet- I know that is monsterous to some:)) with his hands (wait a minute...maybe it was a 10 foot long stick) and flung it with such force that it disappeared into the night sky (flung it, I know, but where...possibly in the neighbors yard. I know what you're thinking, but hey, they aren't that nice anyway). Yes, with such bravery and strength (although, I did catch a ting of jitteriness) our dad saved the day! And he looked just like this...

What? Yes, his muscles are that big! Back off ladies...he's taken!

Several years ago, Shawn and I decided to make boating one of the traditions/activities that we would do to help bond our family. Each passing year, I am more convinced that "wholesome recreational activities" is a huge key to the unity of a family. It brings moments, when there are many days when these moments seem so few, of our children visibly loving and helping each other, big smiles and lots of laughter. However, there are other consequences...a sunburn here and there, plenty o' bruises, muscle aches where you didn't know you had muscles, premature aging due to gravity pull (I'll have to post some of these pictures...they are hilarious!), AND...being at the mercy of Shawn's driving (Boat+speed+zigzag = life flashing before your eyes, mightly plunge in the water and a serious wedgey). We call that FUN!!

These, my friends, are the critters that you find in Mississippi! That, is no small spider ya'll hear! Toad Ranger, our friendly frog, greets us every night at our front door. He is probably the size of an adult palm. As you can see, Mr. Spider is not all that tiny! That's right....do the shaky, shaky thing. Are you feeling the hairs stand up on the back of your neck? If you lived here, you would.

Here is our little man. Nope...Mom didn't make him do it either. I would say it was more of a challenge with Sidney. You can say that Spencer and Sidney will battle head to head for the rest of their lives. And it can get ugly! But, as for now...it gets my house clean! Cool!
I love this little guy! Blue nails, shimmery purple cape and all! We're just missing some dwarfs, friendly animals and a whistling tune (let's pass on the whistle). These are the days to remember, however, I think I'll try to forget the morning drama.

We were wondering if Sidney was ever going to loose her teeth. Well, we spoke too soon. This week was a great one for Sidney, as she lost her two front teeth- neither giving a whole lot of warning. At first, she resisted pulling them out because she didn't want to look "goofy". But who can say such a thing...she looks adorable!

As many of you know, I have been slowly pursuing "finishing what I started at BYU," through BYU's Independent Study program. It has been difficult, to say the least!

Ten reasons for the pain (although there are more!)

1. I am not a "student" anymore.
2. It has been about 15 years since I last attended BYU. (Longer span of mushy brain = smaller brain power = 3 times the effort and time to do any intellectual task- no kidding!) Now, I'm taking Statistics right now, and could probably come up with a formula to prove that, but it would take me all week!
3. I have 4 little monkeys to manage.
4. I have that $115K job that I employ 24/7 called "motherhood/homemaker," which takes the remaining brain cells that I have!
5. Shawn and I have moved 3 states with our family, with no tangible support (babysitter) in tow.
6. The kids misplaced Shawn's rifle earmuffs, the only sound proofing device that we own.
7. I'm getting old and NEED, but don't often get, a nap every day and a bedtime of 9pm.
8. I kept my most challenging courses for last- what was I thinking! That could give you a glimpse into my personality: AVOIDANCE is safer, but not always smarter or more beneficial. See, I am learning life lessons as I tackle this beastly task.
9. I am a procrastinator at times.
10. I would rather surf the internet, clean my kitchen a dozen times, work out in the yard in a sweltering 90+ degrees plus humidity, go shopping with 4 whining, fighting, begging kids, unpack and sort 100 moving boxes...etc.....etc....

BUT, I'm doing it no matter the pain! Remember, NO PAIN..NO GAIN!

Kenadee last week told me, "Mom, I'm definately not going to do school like you...you seem so stressed!"

My goal: My kiddos will remember their Mom going to school. They will value and want to continue their education. They will want to finish in a timely manner, but regardless, they will strive to accomplish their goals. BECAUSE- it is NEVER too late, you are NEVER too old, and we ALL can do anything that we put our mind to! Some tasks we struggle to get through, but nothing is impossible.

Have FAITH and BELIEVE in YOURSELF!

I was checking out my sister's blog today, and found this awesome little tool that she had used with her kids. I thought, "Here is my chance!" I could go on quite a nice little shopping spree if I had a dollar for every, "oh...he/she looks just like his/her daddy!" Now, I know this is not scientific, but hey it was fun and gave me a few smiles- 4 that is, to finally have something, although not human, say "hey...he/she looks just like her mommy!" I love it! So check it out...put an end to your family debate, or at least fix your curiosity. I know you are all itching to know!

I did not anticipate moving would be so stressful. I think I was focusing on the positive side...good job, new home, more friends, new places and things. I failed to take into account the stress of selling our home (a first for Jalayne and I) including, but not limited to, a decling national housing market, an oversupply of homes in our immediate area, picky buyers, dissapointing offers, counter-offers, waiting, contingencies and inspection modification requests out the wazoo, re-siding the entire house, paperwork scanned and then scanned again...I could go on seemingly forever. In the end I guess we should simply be thankful we sold the home at a good price. It is hard to know if we should have held out for a better offer, but in the end I feel that moving sooner than later will be good for the family. All along we had hoped to get the kids in school at our new locale for at least a month, and it looks like we are on track to meet that goal.

The lesson I am taking away from all of this so far is be prepared...physically, menatally and spiritually.
